Flossmoor, Illinois: after two summer storms, where a temporary kitchen could sit
Two storm events hit Flossmoor in the summer of 2026. About 60 percent of the village lost power in early July, ABC7 Chicago reported, and after the Aug. 11 storms with three confirmed EF-1 tornadoes, Cook County issued a disaster proclamation naming Flossmoor. Recovery work can leave a group with no working kitchen.

Two storms, one summer
ABC7 reported on July 6 that Mayor Michelle Nelson put the share of the village without power at about 60 percent after Friday's storms. By Monday about 100 homes were still dark, some with water in the basement.
A month later, the Aug. 11 storms delayed the start of school in District 161. The Homewood-Flossmoor Chronicle's tag page noted schools were set to reopen Aug. 27.
Permits and inspections
- Which health department do I call for a temporary kitchen?
- Ask Flossmoor village hall at 708-798-2300, the number its website lists, which health department covers the address. The state guide says local health departments issue temporary food permits.
- Does a storm change the fourteen-day rule?
- Do not assume so. The state guide defines a temporary establishment as one operating no more than fourteen consecutive days, so ask how the health department treats a longer emergency operation.
Recovery logistics
- Who would need a temporary kitchen after a storm like this?
- If a church hall, school or volunteer meal program lost power or sustained damage, a temporary kitchen could keep meals going. Ask the health department first, then send the rental team the address and start date.
- What can slow a delivery?
- Downed trees and debris piles. Ask the rental team to confirm routing and site access near the delivery date.
What the county proclamation says
Cook County Issues Disaster Proclamation for August 11 Storm Event ↗
Cook County Emergency Management and Regional Security, August 14, 2026
Cook County's board president issued a disaster proclamation on Aug. 14, 2026 for the Aug. 11 storms, which the National Weather Service said included three EF-1 tornadoes and destructive straight-line winds. Flossmoor is among the named communities. The county reported working with ComEd, the Red Cross and the Salvation Army.
For a kitchen rental: If a church, school or volunteer group in a storm-hit area loses its kitchen, a temporary kitchen could become a question; ask the health department what applies before cooking for the public.
The Aug. 14 proclamation lists Flossmoor with Homewood, Glenwood, Lansing and other south suburbs. The county reports working with ComEd, the Red Cross and the Salvation Army, and supplying generators, excavators and light towers. It does not mention kitchens.
A kitchen trailer is a different resource from a generator. If a volunteer organizer wants hot meals, that request would come from the group itself.
Choosing a pad
- Pick a spot clear of large trees, since ABC7 described big trees down at the Flossmoor Golf Course in the July storms.
- Keep the trailer off ground that held water, and ask village hall about low spots.
- Leave a clear approach for the delivery truck, away from debris piles awaiting pickup.
- Ask village hall whether a trailer on church or public property needs any approval.
Power, water and fire checks
- Plan for 220V single-phase service, and ask ComEd or an electrician whether the site can supply it or needs a generator.
- Arrange a water source and wastewater plan, since the state guide says waste water must go to an approved sewage system.
- Secure any propane upright to a solid object, as the State Fire Marshal's State Fair vendor sheet describes.
- Keep a plan for another outage, because the state's spring release lists power outages among storm-season risks.
