Bondurant, Iowa: school lunches while the district builds, repairs and reshuffles

Bondurant-Farrar schools are in a building stretch. A new school for preschool through kindergarten has broken ground for a fall 2027 opening, a new athletic complex drew a community night in June 2026, and the district has sought proposals for flooring at its Intermediate School. Work like this can interrupt serving areas, which is where a temporary kitchen question starts.

Delivery to Bondurant starts at the Des Moines warehouse, about 15 miles out. Route and timing are confirmed by the rental team.

Where a kitchen question could come up

The district's April 2026 newsletter says the new school will serve preschool, developmental kindergarten, transitional kindergarten and kindergarten, moving more than 300 students out of the Garfield Campus. That move reshuffles which building feeds which grades in 2027, so lunch counts and serving lines shift too.

The district's bids page lists a smaller job: a flooring replacement at the Intermediate School, with proposals due September 29, 2026. Floor work can need a room cleared for days. If a serving area is among the rooms, a trailer outside can keep lunch moving.

Units that suit a school lunch line

A short lunch line needs ovens, burners and a three-compartment sink more than a large footprint.

24 ft mobile kitchen

  • Single stack convection oven
  • Griddle oven combination
  • 6 Burner Range Oven Combination
  • Deep Fryers
  • Handwashing sink
  • 3 Compartment sink
  • Prep Table
  • Reach in Ref and Freezer

Power: 220V single phase, 200 amps

Power: 220V single phase, 200 amps

A short-term school scenario

If flooring work at the Intermediate School closes the serving area for ten days, the district could station a kitchen beside the building, run lunch from a window, and keep cafeteria staff on a familiar schedule. Power and a food-grade water hookup would be planned with the facilities office.

Rental schedule: 8 to 14 days

  • 24 ft mobile kitchen: $4,995 to $7,995 per month

The rental team prices the actual term, site and delivery.

Before the permit application

  • Ask the state inspections department whether Bondurant, in Polk County, is licensed by the state or by a local health office, since the state contracts with ten local departments for some counties.
  • The state's mobile unit page says to apply at least 30 days before operating, with a floor plan, menu and equipment list, so start the paperwork before the school calendar sets the date.
  • Ask Bondurant City Hall whether any local permit applies when a trailer sits on school property.

Site setup near a school

  • Pick a spot with truck access that stays clear of bus routes and drop-off lanes.
  • Confirm with the facilities director where 220-volt power can be tied in and which electrician will do it before delivery.
  • Plan a food-grade water supply and a wastewater route with the district, since the state requires wastewater to go to an approved disposal system.
  • Set up a hand-washing station before food handling starts, as the state's temporary food page describes, and ask the fire department what it wants to see for propane.

Questions a Bondurant staffer might ask

What weather matters for a Polk County school site?
The state's disaster history page lists Polk County for storms and flooding in 2018, EF-2 tornado damage in May 2024 and a July 2026 declaration for flash flooding. The governor's page lists proclamation 2026-14, dated July 6, for severe weather beginning June 29. Keep the unit off low drainage spots and ask about a storm plan.
How early should the district call?
The state asks for applications at least 30 days ahead, so call the licensing office and the rental team together, not after a bid closes.

Bondurant-Farrar Community School District newsletter, April 2026 ↗

Bondurant-Farrar Community School District

The district newsletter says it recently held a groundbreaking for a new elementary school due to open in fall 2027. The building will serve preschool through kindergarten and shift more than 300 students from the Garfield Campus, and its design leaves room for future expansion.

For a kitchen rental: If construction crews, move-in teams or a changed lunch schedule leave the district short of serving space in 2027, ask early whether a temporary kitchen could bridge the gap.

The April 2026 newsletter is the source for the new school's fall 2027 opening and the move of students from the Garfield Campus. The bids page names Facilities Director Dustin Gean as the contact, which makes the facilities office the first call for any site question.
