Tea, South Dakota: finishing a school addition and a bus barn in a fast-growing district

The city's website lists Tea Area School District enrollment at 2,514, and the past year has been about finishing: a high school addition now in use, a bus barn nearing completion, and a long punch list. In a Lincoln County suburb adding homes quickly, campus work can raise a plain question about where hot meals come from.

Delivery to Tea starts at the Pierre warehouse, about 230 miles out. Route and timing are confirmed by the rental team.

Who approves a kitchen on a school lot

Which office signs off on a kitchen trailer at a Tea school?
Begin with the South Dakota Department of Health, which writes the mobile food rules. Ask its regional advisor what a unit on a school lot needs, then ask the city of Tea whether its peddler permit applies.
What should the district send to get a unit scheduled?
The parking-area address, a headcount for each meal, start and end dates, and the electrical service available. Ask facilities staff to confirm a 220V feed near the bus barn or gym.

Questions about timing and space

Can a trailer sit on campus during class?
Ask the principal and the fire department first. The unit needs a service window facing a clear lane and distance from bus traffic.
Who handles wastewater?
Ask the district what it allows. The state's July 2026 sheet describes a waste tank at least 15 percent larger than the fresh tank, so hauling must be planned.

What the September 2025 board report means for meals

Tea Weekly, September 25, 2025

Reporting on the September 15 meeting, Tea Weekly said all parts of the high school addition were in use, with punch-list items due by the end of September. The bus barn was due around the end of September or early October, and the district awaited a plat approval for a middle school land purchase.

For a kitchen rental: If the district later needs meal service during building work, the kitchen question would start with the school lot, the electrical feed and the inspection path.

Operations manager Wayne Larsen told the board that every part of the high school addition was in use while HVAC controls, paint and flooring were being finished. The bus barn had its doors and windows in.

If a serving line is ever offline while crews finish near students, the question is where a unit can sit with room to open its service side and run power.

Plan around the snow and the rain

The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls summarized the January 2-3, 2023 storm with 13.4 inches at the Sioux Falls airport and snowfall of 2 to 3 inches per hour at its peak. A school-year kitchen needs a plowed pad.

The August 5-6, 2023 system brought 1 to 1.5 inches of widespread rain across southeastern South Dakota, so a pad must drain as well as sit level.

Budgeting a three-week window

Suppose coaches, staff and a flooring crew share the Tea high school campus for three weeks in August before classes begin, with the regular serving line unavailable. The district wants hot lunches from one pad near the gym lot, plus a dishwashing unit.

Rental schedule: 15 days to 1 month

  • 28 ft mobile kitchen: $4,995 to $7,995 per month
  • 22 to 26 ft low temperature dishwashing trailer: starting at $4,995 per month

The rental team prices the actual term, site and delivery.

Site checklist for a Tea campus

  • Pick a level pad on the high school or Legacy Elementary lot with a service window and a delivery lane.
  • Confirm where a 220V single-phase feed can come from and who may connect it.
  • Keep the trailer clear of the bus barn lanes, where morning traffic concentrates.
  • Ask the Tea fire department whether it wants to see the cooking equipment and extinguisher first.

Permit and inspection notes

The department's mobile food page says layout plans go in at least 30 days before a new unit is built. A unit licensed elsewhere may still need a conversation, so ask the regional advisor what applies to one site.

Tea's website lists peddler permits and a fire department page, while Sioux Falls publishes a Fire Marshal step for propane, electric and grease cooking. Confirm which checks Tea wants.
