Barre, Vermont: feeding crews as North End flood recovery turns to housing

Barre's flood-damaged North End received its first major recovery award in October 2026. Seventeen townhomes are planned at Wobby Park beside the Public Safety Building, with groundbreaking expected in May 2027. Contractors, demolition crews and inspectors may need hot meals on a site like that, and this page explains how to plan for them.

From the Montpelier warehouse, Barre sits about 5 miles away. The rental team confirms routing and timing for the site address.

Questions Barre project managers raise

Is the Wobby Park site ready for crews?
Not yet. Vermont Public reported on October 15, 2026 that groundbreaking is expected in May 2027, with construction finishing the following summer. The same story says the homes will be built in East Montpelier, so on-site work could be compressed. Ask the builder what that schedule looks like before sizing anything.
Who answers food licensing questions for Barre City?
The Barre local health office at 5 Perry Street, Suite 250, phone 802-479-4200, serves Barre City. Its page lists WIC, immunization and emergency preparedness work and does not describe a food license desk, so ask whether to start there or with the statewide program. The state's retail page says trailers need a commercial caterer license.

What the October funding announcement changes

Vermont Public, October 15, 2026

Vermont Public reports that the state awarded Barre money for housing on city-owned land outside the flood zone, paired with nearby buyouts. The plan calls for 17 townhomes at Wobby Park, with groundbreaking expected in May 2027 and construction finishing the next summer.

For a kitchen rental: If site crews or demolition teams need hot meals once work starts, ask early about a temporary kitchen and a firm pad.

Vermont Public says 28 Barre City properties have already been through buyouts, and that two commercial properties and one house across from the lot will be bought out and turned into a park. The mayor called the townhomes a first phase and said the model may need repeating four or five more times.

For a kitchen question, repetition matters more than any single day. Demolition, site work and later phases could each bring a crew that is far from a lunch counter, which is when a shared trailer is worth a call.

From first call to first meal

  1. Health office Call the Barre local health office, then confirm what the commercial caterer license needs. The state page asks for a packet at least 30 days before opening and an opening inspection.
  2. Fire check Ask the fire department or the state fire safety division to confirm propane, hood and extinguisher checks, plus spacing from the Public Safety Building next door.
  3. Pad and utilities Pick firm ground outside the low spots and ask the builder where power and water will stop.
  4. Delivery Share the address, headcount and start date, and the rental team confirms routing and site access.

Pricing for a spring-to-summer build

Water first, then winter

Planning around water comes first in Barre. NWS Burlington lists the July 2023 flood among its recent events and runs a Flood Safety Awareness Week each spring, so assume summer storms are possible and keep the trailer and its hookups off low ground.

A build that slips into autumn meets the winter topics the weather service covers, including wind chill and ice jams. Ask who plows the pad.
